Introduction to and Uses of the Flag of the Republic of Iceland<\/h4>\n

I. Basic Introduction to the National Flag<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Icelandic name for the national flag is \u00edslenski f\u00e1ninn<\/em>. It belongs to the family of Nordic cross flags. The blue, white, and red cross design was officially adopted in 1915. III. Flag Etiquette<\/strong><\/p>\n

The cross must always be positioned toward the hoist, and the flag must never be displayed upside down. The flag must not touch the ground. Damaged or faded flags should be disposed of respectfully and must no longer be flown.<\/p>\n

Half-Mast Procedure:<\/strong> This procedure applies only to national flags flown from formal flagpoles. The flag must first be raised to the top of the pole and then lowered to a position approximately one-third of the way down from the top. Decorative strings of flags are not flown at half-mast.<\/p>\n

The flag should generally be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset. If displayed at night, it must be properly illuminated.<\/p>\n

When multiple flags are displayed together, the Icelandic national flag must be given the position of highest precedence.<\/p>\n
