Introduction to the National Flag of the Republic of Lithuania and Its Uses

I. Basic Introduction to the National Flag

The Lithuanian national flag is called Lietuvos vėliava in Lithuanian and is also known as the Trispalvė, meaning “the Tricolor.” It was first adopted as the national flag in 1918, restored in 1988, and formally established in its current proportions through amendments to the national flag law in 2004. Its status is also recognized in the Constitution.

Design and Proportions: The rectangular flag consists of three equal horizontal stripes: yellow at the top, green in the middle, and red at the bottom. Its official width-to-length ratio is 3:5. When displayed vertically, the yellow stripe should appear on the viewer’s left, the green stripe in the center, and the red stripe on the right.

Color Symbolism

Yellow: Represents the sun and Lithuania’s golden fields, symbolizing abundant harvests, prosperity, and light. It also reflects the country’s renowned amber heritage.

II. Main Uses

1. Civil Flag

Private citizens, households, companies, and social organizations may freely display the national tricolor. It is widely flown on statutory flag days, including Statehood Day, the Day of the Restoration of Independence, and the Day of the Defenders of Freedom. It may also be displayed at weddings and other important civilian celebrations to express national pride.

Merchant ships and privately owned vessels may use it as an indication of Lithuanian nationality.

Flag-Flying Customs: The flag is generally raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset. At Gediminas Castle Tower in Vilnius, the national flag is raised and lowered daily as part of an important national ceremony. Private households may fly the flag at half-mast following the death of a family member.

2. Use by Official Institutions

The national flag is displayed daily at Parliament, government buildings, courts, local administrative offices, state schools, embassies, and consulates. Schools display the flag during the academic term.

It is also used as a symbol of national sovereignty during state visits, national celebrations, official gatherings, elections, and other formal events.

3. Military Use

Military flags are displayed at army barracks and military bases, while Lithuanian naval vessels use the official Naval Ensign. The appropriate military flags are used during military parades, maritime defence exercises, and official military ceremonies. The standard national tricolor is not the same as a military flag.

4. Presidential Standard

The Presidential Standard is displayed at the Presidential Residence and on official vehicles and vessels used exclusively by the President. It represents the Lithuanian Head of State.

5. Ceremonial and International Use

Following a major national disaster or the death of an important public figure, flags may be flown at half-mast nationwide. The correct procedure is to raise the flag fully to the top of the pole before lowering it to a position approximately one-third of the way down. Before taking down the flag, it must first be raised to the top and then fully lowered.

At the Olympic Games, international summits, diplomatic events, and other international occasions, the Lithuanian flag is displayed as the national symbol of Lithuania.
