Introduction to the National Flag of the Republic of Slovenia and Its Uses

I. Basic Introduction to the National Flag

The Slovenian national flag is called Zastava Slovenije in Slovenian. Its tricolor design originated during the national revival movement of 1848. The current flag was officially adopted following Slovenia’s declaration of independence on June 25, 1991, and is protected under national legislation governing state symbols.

Design and Proportions: The rectangular flag has an official width-to-length ratio of 1:2. It consists of three equal horizontal stripes: white at the top, blue in the middle, and red at the bottom. The national coat of arms is positioned in the upper hoist corner, with one half extending into the white stripe and the other half into the blue stripe. The official colors include Pantone 287 C blue and Pantone 186 C red.

4. Presidential Standard

5. Ceremonial and International Use

Following a major national disaster or the death of an important public figure, flags may be flown at half-mast nationwide. The correct procedure is to raise the flag fully to the top of the pole before lowering it to a position approximately one-third of the way down. Before taking down the flag, it must first be raised to the top and then fully lowered.
