I. Basic Introduction to the National Flag
The Swedish national flag is called Sveriges flagga in Swedish. Its current design was officially established by law on June 22, 1906, and belongs to the Nordic cross flag tradition.
Design and Proportions: The flag features a golden-yellow Nordic cross on a blue field, with the vertical arm positioned toward the hoist. The official proportion of the rectangular civil flag is 5:8. The official colors are Pantone 301 C blue and Pantone 116 C golden yellow.
Color Symbolism: Blue and yellow originate from the traditional colors of Sweden’s royal coat of arms. Blue symbolizes truth, loyalty, the sea, and the sky, while yellow represents generosity. The Nordic cross reflects the Christian cultural tradition shared by the Nordic countries.
Main Flag Variants
Civil Flag: A standard rectangular flag featuring a yellow Nordic cross on a blue field, without a swallowtail or coat of arms. It may be used by private citizens, companies, and civilian organizations.
Three-Tailed State and War Flag: A swallow-tailed flag with three pointed tails, reserved for government institutions, the armed forces, and naval vessels. Private use is prohibited.
Royal Standard: A swallow-tailed flag displaying the Greater Coat of Arms of Sweden at the center of the cross. It is reserved exclusively for the King of Sweden and the Royal Family.
II. Main Uses
1. Civil Flag
Private citizens, households, companies, and civilian organizations may freely display the Civil Flag. It is commonly flown on Sweden’s National Day on June 6, on official flag-flying days, and during weddings and other important family celebrations to express national pride.
Merchant ships and privately owned vessels may use it as an indication of Swedish nationality.
Flag-Flying Customs: From March to October, the flag is generally raised at 8:00 a.m.; from November to February, it is raised at 9:00 a.m. It should be lowered at sunset and no later than 9:00 p.m. Private citizens may follow these customs voluntarily, as they are not legally mandatory.
Private households may fly the flag at half-mast following the death of a family member.
2. Three-Tailed State and War Flag
The Three-Tailed State and War Flag is flown at Parliament, government buildings, courts, state universities, embassies, consulates, and other official institutions.
It is also used on government-owned vessels, during state visits and major national ceremonies, and by the Army and Navy as a military standard and naval ensign. It may be displayed during military parades, coastal defence exercises, and official military ceremonies. Private individuals and privately owned companies are strictly prohibited from using this version.
3. Royal Standard
The Royal Standard is displayed at the Royal Palace and on vehicles and vessels used exclusively by the Royal Family. It represents the Swedish Head of State.
4. Ceremonial and International Use
Following a major national disaster or the death of a senior member of the Royal Family, flags may be flown at half-mast nationwide. The correct procedure is to raise the flag fully to the top of the pole before lowering it to a position approximately one-third of the way down. When taking down the flag, it must first be raised to the top before being fully lowered.
At the Olympic Games, international conferences, diplomatic events, and other international occasions, the Swedish flag is displayed as the national symbol of Sweden.
