The Norwegian national flag is called Norges flagg<\/em> in Norwegian. It was officially adopted on July 13, 1821, and belongs to the Nordic cross flag tradition. The flag was designed by Fredrik Meltzer.<\/p>\n

Civilian merchant ships and privately owned vessels use it as an indication of Norwegian nationality.<\/p>\n

The flag is widely displayed by the public on official flag-flying days. From March to October, it is generally raised at 8:00 a.m.; from November to February, it is raised at 9:00 a.m. It should be lowered at sunset and no later than 9:00 p.m. Private citizens may follow these customs voluntarily, as they are not mandatory for civilian use.<\/p>\n

The Swallow-Tailed War Flag is used by the Norwegian Army and Navy, including on naval vessels, as an army standard and naval ensign.<\/p>\n

4. Ceremonial and International Use<\/strong><\/p>\n

Following a major national disaster or the death of a senior member of the Royal Family, flags may be flown at half-mast nationwide. The correct procedure is to raise the flag fully to the top of the pole before lowering it to a position approximately one-third of the way down. When taking down the flag, it must first be raised to the top before being fully lowered.<\/p>\n
