Introduction to the National Flag of the Italian Republic and Its Uses

I. Basic Introduction to the National Flag

The Italian national flag is called Bandiera d’Italia in Italian and is commonly known as Il Tricolore, meaning “the Tricolor.” Its three-color design originated with the Cispadane Republic in 1797. Following the establishment of the Italian Republic in 1946, the flag was formally recognized under Article 12 of the Constitution, which came into effect in 1948.

Design and Proportions: The rectangular flag has an official width-to-length ratio of 2:3. It consists of three equal vertical stripes arranged from the hoist to the fly: green, white, and red. The national flag itself does not contain a coat of arms. The official textile colors are Fern Green Pantone 17-6153 TCX, Bright White Pantone 11-0601 TCX, and Flame Scarlet Pantone 18-1662 TCX.

Color Symbolism

The following interpretations are widely accepted traditions but are not formally defined by law.

Merchant ships and privately owned vessels may use the tricolor as an indication of Italian nationality.

Private households may fly the flag at half-mast following the death of a family member.

3. Military Use

Army and Air Force bases display their respective military colors, while Italian naval vessels use the official Naval Ensign. Flag ceremonies are also conducted during military parades, exercises, and commemorative events. The standard tricolor is not the same as a military flag.

4. Presidential Standard

The Presidential Standard is displayed at the Presidential Residence and on official vehicles and vessels used by the President. It represents the Italian Head of State.

5. Ceremonial and International Use

Following a major national disaster or the death of an important public figure, flags may be flown at half-mast nationwide. The correct procedure is to raise the flag fully to the top of the pole before lowering it to a position approximately one-third of the way down. Before taking down the flag, it must first be raised to the top and then fully lowered.

At the Olympic Games, international summits, diplomatic events, sporting competitions, and other international occasions, the Italian flag is displayed as the national symbol of the Italian Republic.
