I. Basic Introduction to the National Flag

The Greek national flag is called Σημαία της Ελλάδος in Greek and is commonly known as the Γαλανόλευκη, meaning “the blue and white.” Its design was first established during the Greek War of Independence in 1822, while the current standardized version was formally adopted by law on December 22, 1978.

Design and Proportions: The rectangular flag has an official width-to-length ratio of 2:3. It consists of nine equal horizontal stripes—five blue and four white—arranged alternately, with blue stripes at both the top and bottom. A white equal-armed Greek cross appears inside a blue square in the upper hoist corner. This blue canton extends across the height of the upper five stripes.
