I. Basic Introduction to the National Flag
The national flag of North Macedonia is called Знаме на Северна Македонија in Macedonian. The current flag was officially adopted by law on October 5, 1995, and is protected under the national Flag Law. Its design is commonly associated with the “new sun of freedom,” a symbol also referenced in the national anthem.
Design and Proportions: The flag features a golden sun centered on a deep red field, with eight rays extending outward to the four edges of the flag. Its official width-to-length ratio is 1:2. The center of the sun aligns with the intersection of the flag’s diagonal lines, while the diameter of the solar disc is one-seventh of the flag’s length. The official colors are Pantone 485 C red and Pantone 108 C golden yellow.
Color Symbolism
Red: Symbolizes the blood shed in the nation’s struggle for freedom and independence, representing courage and sacrifice.
Golden Eight-Rayed Sun: Known as the “new sun of freedom,” it symbolizes light, liberty, and a bright national future. It also represents the sun watching over and protecting the people.
Main Flag Variants
National Flag: The standard red flag featuring a golden eight-rayed sun without the national coat of arms. It is used by both government institutions and the general public.
Presidential Standard: Based on the national flag with additional elements from the coat of arms of North Macedonia. It is reserved for the Presidential Residence and the President’s official travel.
Armed Forces Flags: Special military versions bearing military insignia. They are used at military bases and during official military ceremonies and are distinct from the civilian national flag.
II. Main Uses
1. Mandatory Display by Official Institutions
The national flag is displayed daily at the Presidential Residence, Parliament, government buildings, courts, local administrative offices, border posts, embassies, and consulates. Public primary schools, secondary schools, universities, and other educational institutions display the flag during the academic term.
It is used as a symbol of national sovereignty on Independence Day on September 8, Ilinden on August 2, and other national commemorative occasions, as well as during state visits, official ceremonies, and elections.
Diplomatic and official government vehicles may display small national flags.
2. Civilian Use
Private citizens, companies, and social organizations may freely fly or display the national flag. It is widely displayed during major national holidays, while small tabletop flags may be used at weddings and other important civilian celebrations.
Merchant ships and privately owned vessels may use it as an indication of North Macedonian nationality.
Private households may fly the flag at half-mast following the death of a family member.
3. Military Use
Military flags are displayed at army barracks and military bases. Military units use their designated flags during parades, exercises, and commemorative ceremonies. The standard civilian national flag is not the same as a military flag.
4. Presidential Standard
The Presidential Standard is displayed at the Presidential Residence and on official vehicles and vessels used by the President. It represents the Head of State of North Macedonia.
5. Ceremonial and International Use
Following a major national disaster or the death of an important public figure, flags may be flown at half-mast nationwide. The correct procedure is to raise the flag fully to the top of the pole before lowering it to a position approximately one-third of the way down. Before taking down the flag, it must first be raised to the top and then fully lowered.
At the Olympic Games, international summits, diplomatic events, sporting competitions, and other international occasions, the flag is displayed as the national symbol of North Macedonia.
