I. Basic Introduction to the National Flag
The national flag of Vatican City State is called Bandiera della Città del Vaticano in Italian. The current flag was officially adopted in 1929 following the entry into force of the Lateran Treaty and is recognized under the Fundamental Law of Vatican City State. It is one of only two square national flags used by sovereign states, the other being the flag of Switzerland.
Design and Proportions: The flag is square, with an official ratio of 1:1. It is divided vertically into two equal sections: golden yellow on the hoist side and pure white on the fly side. The white section displays the papal emblem, consisting of the Papal Tiara and two crossed Keys of Saint Peter. The official shade of gold is Pantone 116 C. A rectangular variant may be used on certain ceremonial occasions.
Symbolism
Gold and White: Derived from the traditional heraldic colors of the Holy See, gold and white represent the golden and silver Keys of Saint Peter and symbolize the authority of the Church. Gold represents spiritual authority in heaven, while silver represents authority on earth.

4. Ceremonial and International Use
Following a major disaster or the death of an important public figure, the flag may be flown at half-mast as a sign of mourning. The correct procedure is to raise the flag fully to the top of the pole before lowering it to a position approximately one-third of the way down. Before taking down the flag, it must first be raised to the top and then fully lowered.
At international diplomatic summits and meetings of international organizations, the flag is displayed as the flag of a sovereign state.
5. Special Note
Vatican City is a landlocked city-state and does not maintain a navy. Historical treaties have permitted vessels authorized by the Holy See to use the flag as a distinguishing emblem.
